We often brandish the term "critical thinking" and it is often touted as a much needed 21st century skill, but what does it actually mean? In this paper written 25 years ago (!) Burbules and Berk summarizes and critiques the 2 main conceptions of the word "Critical" from the 2 main schools - Critical Thinking (Siegel) and Critical Pedagogy (Freire) and argues that they have their strengths but also limitations.
